Yesterday on the market someone asked me:
how is indigo considered a natural dye if there are chemicals used in the process? Such a good question
and I thought it would be nice to share a bit more about it here, as some of you might wonder too:

There are two kinds of indigo: natural and synthetic.
The fabrics we use are dyed the natural way, made from the indigo plant.

Still, even natural indigo needs a little help: To make the pigment dissolve and attach to the fabric, the dye bath needs a few supporting ingredients like lime (calcium hydroxide) and a reducing agent such as sodium hydrosulfite.

These are non-toxic, low-impact substances , but gentle helpers that make the natural pigment bond to the fabric.

So while the pigment itself is plant-based, the process needs a few soft helpers to bring that deep blue magic to life 💙✨

Working with truly authentic, handcrafted fabrics brings not only beauty, but also small challenges. Imperfections are part of it, colors vary from item to item and sometimes bleed, so they need special care. We see this not as a flaw, but as a reminder of their handmade nature: the very thing that gives them their soul and makes each piece truly one of a kind.

Today we celebrate the artisans keeping this beautiful tradition alive, weaving with so much skill, patience, and love. Every thread is created on a manual loom, often in the artisan’s own home or garden, using techniques passed down for generations. We’re proud to support this craft and share their incredible work with you. And how amazing is it that there’s now an official day to honour it?! 🙌🏼

These are the techniques we’ve been working with in Thaamsz so far. And honestly, I’m glad I don’t have to choose just one because each holds its own unique magic.

My journey with textiles began as a kid, experimenting with tie & dye, a form of shibori , such a fun and simple way to upcycle your clothes. But I’ve always felt deeply drawn to block printing. That love even took me to India, where this traditional craft originates. While exploring block print regions, I got introduced to handloom, and completely fell for its natural texture and the time-intensive process behind it. So much patience, so much care.

And then there’s embroidery, the finishing touch that brings everything together. Even the tiniest stitched detail can transform a piece and make it feel more personal.

Beautiful Handwoven Ikat Fabric 🌺
What makes ikat so special is that the pattern isn’t printed: it’s dyed into the yarn before weaving begins.
Sections of thread are tied off to resist the dye, then dyed, untied, and dyed again, until the loom turns yarn into fabric.

That’s why ikat has those soft, slightly blurred edges.
It’s part of the process and what makes each piece truly one of a kind! ✨

The Indigofera plant has been used for centuries to create this magical colour. Its green leaves are harvested, fermented, and slowly transformed into a deep, rich blue dye.

A fun fact I got to learn while visiting one of the block print studios in India: when the cloth first comes out of the dye bath, it’s actually green!
It’s only when the fabric touches the air that it turns blue, thanks to the reaction with oxygen ✨

Woven, carved, printed, and dyed ✨
Every fabric tells a story of time, care and craftsmanship.Made through many intricate steps by skilled local artisans in India, using ancient techniques passed down through generations.
During my last trip to India, I visited some of the villages to meet the people behind the fabrics.
I’m so happy that together we can support their craft and help shine a light on these beautiful textile traditions 🥰

Vorige week vonden de allereerste naaiworkshops plaats in de winkel. 🪡🧵✂️ Het was zó leuk om jullie geconcentreerd en nieuwsgierig aan tafel te zien werken en om jullie te ontmoeten! Zo gaaf ook om te zien hoe de meesten van jullie binnenkwamen zonder enige ervaring, en uiteindelijk tóch naar huis gingen met een zelfgemaakte blouse of gilet. 🙌🏼
De lessen worden gegeven door niemand minder dan Ria van Kleef van @naaistudio84  Meer dan 10 jaar geleden, tijdens mijn modeopleiding, verruilde ik mijn stage bij een fast fashion-hoofdkantoor voor een plek bij Ria, op zoek naar een duurzamer alternatief. En daar ging een wereld voor me open.
Ria is een echte vakvrouw, met eindeloos veel kennis en liefde voor het ambacht. Ze tekent haar eigen patronen, naait haar eigen collecties, bedrukt haar kleding met haar zeefdrukramen én laat stoffen verven bij ververijen in Nederland. We zijn al die jaren bevriend gebleven, en het voelt echt als een droom dat we nu samenwerken. Haar vakmanschap gecombineerd met onze collectie handbedrukte Indiase stoffen… ✨
Er zijn nog een paar plekjes vrij voor de workshops op 11 en 12 juni , dus als je ook zin hebt om aan te schuiven: heel welkom!
In augustus gaan we weer verder, met nieuwe leuke modelletjes – zoals tassen, wikkeltops en meer.

Houd mijn Instagram en website in de gaten voor de nieuwe data! Vanaf dat moment zijn we wel genoodzaakt om de prijzen van de workshops iets te verhogen, dus als je je nog wilt aanmelden voor de huidige prijs: dit is je kans.

Did you know our block printed fabrics are made using age-old techniques passed down through generations? 🧵✨

From carving intricate motifs into wooden blocks by hand, to carefully stamping the fabric and drying it on the ground right in the heart of the village.

Last January, I returned to the villages where most of our fabrics are crafted. Around every corner, you’ll find block carvers working in front of their homes, printing studios full of rhythm and color, and fabrics gently drying under the sun.

🧡 A little note: The large hanging fabrics at the beginning and end of this reel are screen printed — a faster method, also practiced in these villages. We included them for the atmosphere, because walking beneath these large printed cloths felt like a dream we just had to share with you. ✨

- I’ve been so busy with the Pop-Up store lately that I didn’t have much time to share all the videos and pictures from my last trip. So a big thanks to @alicereinders who kindly offered to scroll through my content and edit this reels for me 🥰

Celebrating 2 years THAAMSZ this week! ✨🌞 Two years ago, THAAMSZ officially began, but really, it all started long before that.
Back in 2019, I found myself in the garden, hands stained with plant pigments, experimenting with natural dyeing on secondhand clothes. No plan, just curiosity. I shot my first little upcycled tie-dye collection and started selling it at local markets.

At the age of 21, I set off on my first solo adventure to India. 🇮🇳🧡 I totally fell in love with the country, the people, the chaos, and of course, the fabrics. On my second trip, I ended up living above a block print studio during Covid. I had all the time in the world to dive into the craft and learn by watching, asking, doing.

The fabrics were stunning, but finding good tailors was a journey in itself. I went back to the Netherlands to save up money through my photography — and then returned, this time with a clear mission: to find trustworthy tailors & artisans and bring my first real collection to life.

In May 2023, that first collection arrived in the Netherlands. I started selling at Swan Markets across the country and kept returning to India to design new pieces and strengthen connections.

Now, two years later, a dream comes true: having my very own (pop-up) store at Oudegracht 310 in Utrecht.

Still creating. Still learning. Still building.
